How Often Should Men Wash Their Hair?
Daily? Every other day? The honest answer depends on your hair and scalp — here is how to find your routine.
Why washing less is often better
Shampoo strips oil. Your scalp responds by making more, which can leave hair greasy and dry. For most men, washing every two to three days keeps the scalp balanced.
Match it to your hair
- Oily scalp / fine hair: every one to two days.
- Normal hair: two to three times a week.
- Coarse, curly or textured hair: once or twice a week, with conditioner in between.
Doing it right
- Rinse thoroughly with warm (not hot) water first.
- Use a small amount of shampoo, focusing on the scalp, not the lengths.
- Condition the lengths, not the roots.
- Finish with a cooler rinse to flatten the hair cuticle.
Between washes
On non-wash days, a quick rinse and re-style is usually enough. If you use a lot of product, an occasional clarifying wash clears build-up. When you next sit down for a men’s haircut in Chicago, ask your barber which shampoo suits your scalp — they can feel the difference your routine is making. You can book one at Artur’s Barber Shop.
