Scalp Care for Men: Beating Dandruff and Dryness

GroomingPublished February 14, 2026·By The Clipper & Comb Editorial Team

A healthy head of hair starts with a healthy scalp. Here is a no-nonsense routine for flakes, itch and dryness.

Know the difference

Dry scalp and dandruff look similar but differ: dry scalp flakes are small and dry, while dandruff flakes are larger and oilier, driven by a common yeast. Treating the wrong one wastes time.

A simple routine

  1. Don’t over-wash — it dries the scalp and can worsen flaking.
  2. Use the right shampoo — a gentle moisturising one for dryness, an anti-dandruff one a couple of times a week for dandruff.
  3. Massage, don’t scratch — fingertips, not nails.
  4. Rinse fully — leftover product irritates skin.

Everyday helpers

  • Drink enough water and ease up on very hot showers.
  • Keep hats and helmets clean.
  • Give your scalp some sun-safe fresh air.

When to get help

If flaking, redness or itch persists despite a good routine, see a pharmacist or doctor. For everyday upkeep, your barber can recommend a shampoo while you are in for a men’s haircut in Chicago, and a clean, well-shaped cut from Artur’s Barber Shop always feels fresher on a cared-for scalp.
